How to prepare a compliance evidence map with AI

A compliance evidence map connects each applicable requirement to an implemented control, accountable owner, test procedure, operating artifact, result, and unresolved gap. AI can organize cross-references, but it cannot prove operation from policy text or infer that one artifact covers every period. Validate applicability with specialists and inspect evidence from the actual control period.

Establish the requirement and applicability basis

Inventory the controlling laws, regulations, contracts, standards, and internal commitments. Record jurisdiction, entity, system, process, version, effective date, and the specialist who confirmed applicability. Break compound text into obligations without changing meaning.

NIST SP 800-53A provides assessment procedures for security and privacy controls, including examination, interview, and test methods in its federal information-system context. The US Government Accountability Office’s Green Book distinguishes control design, implementation, operation, and documentation for federal internal control. These sources support an evidence-oriented structure; they do not determine which requirements apply to another organization.

Create an obligation register:

| Obligation | Source | Applicability | Control | Owner | Status | |---|---|---|---|---|---| | Review privileged access quarterly | Contract section 8.2 | In scope for service accounts | Access review procedure | Security owner | Evidence pending | | Remove access after approved exit | Internal policy 4.1 | In scope for workforce identities | Deprovision workflow | Identity owner | Sample available | | Retain approval record | Contract schedule C | In scope for review period | Approval logging | Operations owner | Gap observed |

The example is synthetic. “Control documented” is not the same as “control operated.”

Preserve population, period, and provenance

Every artifact needs source system, owner, extraction method, period, hash or version where appropriate, and custody. Define the population before selecting samples. A screenshot may show configuration at one moment; it does not establish operation across months.

Track negative and conflicting evidence. If the review record lists 120 accounts but the identity export contains 127, preserve the discrepancy and resolve the population difference before concluding coverage. AI may reconcile tables, but formulas and joins require independent checking.

Record gaps without manufacturing closure

Use distinct statuses: not assessed, evidence requested, design gap, implementation gap, operating exception, remediation in progress, retest pending, and supported for defined period. Avoid a single red, amber, or green field that hides the nature of the gap.

Remediation evidence is not effectiveness evidence. A changed procedure or closed ticket should lead to a later test on new events. Name the residual question, owner, due date, and decision authority.

Verify the evidence map

Before use, confirm:

The artifact is the evidence map plus source register, control descriptions, evidence inventory, population reconciliation, test results, gap log, remediation plan, and retest record.

  • requirement versions and applicability are recorded;
  • compound obligations are traceable to exact source text;
  • each control has a trigger, actor, action, population, and evidence;
  • policies are not treated as proof of operation;
  • artifacts include period and provenance;
  • test methods and acceptance conditions are explicit;
  • population differences and exceptions remain visible;
  • remediation and retest are separate; and
  • conclusions stay within the sampled period and scope.

Sources and claim map

The obligations, controls, account counts, and gaps are synthetic. This educational method does not establish applicability, conformity, audit readiness, legal sufficiency, or control effectiveness.

  • NIST, SP 800-53A Rev. 5: supports structured examination, interview, and test procedures for assessing controls in its scope.
  • US Government Accountability Office, Green Book: supports the limited distinction among control design, implementation, operation, and documentation in US federal internal control.
