AI-Assisted Finance Deliverables: A Control Map for Reviewable Work
AI-assisted finance deliverables should be built as reviewable evidence packages, not polished documents whose calculations and assumptions are hidden. A useful package connects every material number to its source, records transformations, separates reported facts from forecasts, and assigns a person to approve the final use. The practical objective is a shorter, clearer review path without.
AI-assisted finance deliverables should be built as reviewable evidence packages, not polished documents whose calculations and assumptions are hidden. A useful package connects every material number to its source, records transformations, separates reported facts from forecasts, and assigns a person to approve the final use. The practical objective is a shorter, clearer review path without weakening financial controls.
Classify the deliverable before choosing controls
Begin with the decision the artifact supports. A month-end variance note, cash forecast, board chart, valuation model, and regulatory filing do not carry the same evidence burden. Record the audience, decision date, reporting period, materiality threshold, source systems, permitted AI use, and accountable reviewer. Then label each element as reported fact, calculated value, assumption, estimate, or narrative interpretation.
Structured financial information can retain useful context when the reporting period, units, definitions, and related disclosures travel with the number. The SEC explains that Inline XBRL combines human-readable reporting with machine-readable tagged data and exposes contextual information around individual data points (SEC Inline XBRL). That supports preserving lineage and context; it does not mean an AI-generated analysis is accurate merely because it began with tagged data.

Use a finance artifact control map
Create one row for every material claim or figure. The columns are artifact section, claim ID, source record, extraction date, transformation, formula owner, assumption, tolerance, independent check, approval status, and release note. Store prompts or model outputs only when policy permits and they are needed to understand the transformation. The control map should remain readable without access to the model conversation.
For data used as evidence, the GAO data-reliability guide focuses on accuracy, completeness, and applicability for the intended purpose (GAO data reliability). Apply that test separately. A complete ledger extract may still be inapplicable to a forward-looking decision; a relevant forecast may still rely on incomplete inputs. More rows do not compensate for weak source quality.

Worked example: cash forecast review packet
Imagine a synthetic thirteen-week cash forecast. The workbook contains bank balances, expected receipts, payroll, supplier payments, and three timing assumptions. An AI assistant drafts the commentary and highlights a possible shortfall in week seven.
The control map records the opening balance as a reported fact linked to a dated bank export. Receipts are calculated from invoice records and a documented collection rule. Payroll is tied to an approved schedule. Supplier payments include one manually entered exception. The week-seven shortfall is an estimate, not an observed result. The reviewer recalculates totals from the source table, tests the timing assumptions, and checks that the commentary describes the range rather than presenting one scenario as certain.
The release packet contains the workbook version, a source manifest, the control map, the variance commentary, and an approval record. It excludes unused model text. If a source changes after review, the packet receives a new version and the affected checks are repeated.
Match verification to the failure mode
Recalculation catches arithmetic and formula errors. Reconciliation catches missing or duplicated records. Boundary testing probes dates, signs, currencies, units, and empty values. Sensitivity analysis tests assumptions. Read-across compares narrative claims with the tables they describe. Independent challenge asks whether the proposed explanation fits contrary evidence.
Do not ask one reviewer to “check everything.” Name the check and its evidence. For example, a controller may approve accounting treatment, a treasury owner may approve timing assumptions, and a communications reviewer may check that the executive summary does not overstate the analysis. Approval authority must be defined by the organization, not inferred by the AI tool.
Release and retention checklist
Before distribution, confirm that the reporting period and currency are visible; formulas have not been replaced by unexplained values; sources are dated and accessible to the reviewer; assumptions are distinguished from facts; totals reconcile; material exceptions have dispositions; and the narrative matches the controlled workbook. Record the artifact version, approver, release time, and intended audience.
This method is educational guidance for controlling AI-assisted finance work. It does not establish accounting treatment, audit sufficiency, regulatory compliance, or the accuracy of a particular deliverable. Those conclusions require the organization’s applicable standards, records, professionals, and approvals.
