Analyze cash flow timing with AI
Reconcile a fictional weekly cash bridge, isolate a receipt-timing mismatch and show how the corrected date changes the lowest projected balance.
Financial analysts can use AI to organize a cash-flow bridge when every movement remains tied to an authorized record and timing assumptions stay visible. This fictional four-week exercise reconciles opening cash, receipts and payments, then corrects one receipt date. It produces a reviewable liquidity view, not financial advice, a treasury instruction or evidence about a real organization.
Fix the cash question and period
A useful cash analysis begins with the decision horizon, currency and definition of available cash.
The fictional owner needs to know whether the account stays above a 40-unit operating buffer during four weekly periods. Opening available cash is 70 units at the close of week zero. Restricted balances, credit facilities, foreign exchange and unapproved funding are outside this exercise.
Ask AI to create a scope header with account, currency, cut-off, period, buffer and exclusions. Verify those fields against the supplied brief. Do not mix an accounting balance, an undrawn facility and an operationally available balance. The calculation is useful only if the starting population is stable.
Reconcile opening cash before forecasting
The bridge should start from a balance that can be traced rather than a copied planning number.
The fictional bank record shows 72 units, while the cash ledger shows 70. A two-unit payment cleared the bank after the ledger cut-off and is already recorded in the ledger. Treat 70 as the opening planning balance and retain the cut-off difference as a reconciliation item rather than adding it twice.
AI may compare the two records and draft the reconciliation line. Check the sign, date and whether the item is already reflected in either source. A difference with an explanation is not automatically cleared; retain its owner and expected clearing evidence.
Build the dated movement bridge
Receipts and payments need dates, amounts and source identifiers before they need a summary.
The supplied schedule has weekly net movements of minus 12, plus 8, minus 18 and plus 20 units. Starting from 70, the projected closes are 58, 66, 48 and 68. The minimum is 48 in week three, eight units above the fictional buffer.
Ask AI to group movements by supported date and produce the arithmetic. Recalculate the four closes independently and reconcile the ending 68 to opening 70 plus total net movement of minus 2. Do not infer timing from invoice order or let the same receivable appear in both a detailed line and a summary total.
Separate timing changes from amount changes
A delayed receipt affects the path even when the four-week ending balance is unchanged.
One 15-unit customer receipt was placed in week two, but the receivables note says its confirmed date is week four. Move 15 units from week two to week four without changing the total. The revised closes become 58, 51, 33 and 68. The ending balance is still 68, but week three now falls seven units below the buffer.
Ask AI to label the correction as timing-only and preserve both versions. Verify that total movement remains minus 2 and that only the intermediate balances change. A narrative that discusses only the ending balance would hide the liquidity issue created by the corrected date.
Test a bounded response
A liquidity response should distinguish an available operational choice from an assumed source of cash.
The fictional packet allows the owner to consider moving an optional eight-unit purchase from week three to week four. Under that case, week three closes at 41 and week four remains 68 because the payment still occurs within the horizon. Mark the move as an option awaiting owner approval, not an executed action.
AI can calculate the case and draft the decision question. It should not invent a credit line, accelerate a receipt without evidence or choose which obligation to delay. Record operational consequences and authority next to each option so arithmetic does not masquerade as permission.
Deliver the cash review note
The handoff should expose the reconciliation, timing correction, minimum balance and unresolved decisions.
Provide the opening reconciliation, dated movement table, original and corrected weekly closes, buffer comparison, optional-purchase case and the owners of the bank difference and purchase decision. Link every amount to its fictional source identifier.
Lead with the corrected minimum of 33, not the unchanged ending balance of 68. State that the eight-unit purchase move would lift the minimum to 41 if approved. Keep collection likelihood, payment authorization and financing outside the conclusion because the exercise does not supply evidence for them.
